Drilling Without Cracking

Cracking is the heartbreak of DIY bubbler-making. But it’s preventable with patience, water, and the right gear. Here’s what we’ve learned:

The Right Tools:

  • Diamond-tipped drill bit — 6mm to 12mm depending on your downstem

  • Cordless drill (variable speed preferred)

  • Water source — spray bottle, running water, or submersion setup

  • Clamp or grip pad — to hold your piece stable

Best Practices:

  1. Start small — Use a pilot hole if possible. Then gradually increase bit size.

  2. Keep it wet — Drill with the bit and surface fully wet to reduce heat + friction.

  3. Go slow — Low RPMs and light pressure let the bit grind, not punch.

  4. Angle slightly to create a slope entry — straight pressure often chips edges.

Common Mistakes:

  • Using masonry or wood bits (not sharp or strong enough)

  • Drilling dry or rushing the pressure

  • Not supporting the inside wall during the final push

Pro Tip: Practice on dollar-store glass before you touch your thrifted treasures.
